"TO SUFFER A LICK" 2023
Allouche Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of new works by Malik Roberts titled To Suffer A Lick. This new collection of works invites the viewer to explore their own sense of liminality and uncertainty through paintings both dynamic and abstract, showcasing the artist's individualistic approach to deconstructing and fragmenting figures. Roberts' inspiration for the exhibition came from the recent global pandemic which created a sense of transition leading to a mental battle of waiting for the outcome. The exhibition title reflects the feeling of waiting for an opportunity while enduring uncertainty, encapsulating the sense of grace that comes with success. His figures, mostly set in homelike spaces, mirror Roberts' own experience during the pandemic, where-in a lot of time was spent at home. Through Roberts' line work, these portraits accentuate the emotions and perspectives he wants the viewers to feel, creating an amalgamation of people, scenes, emotions and his own thoughts and feelings to create each subject.
